In the spring of 2001, the leader of the Human
Resources Department and Benefits Manager made
a recommendation to the Superintendent that a formalized
program to curtail the escalating costs of claims
resulting from job related injuries and chronic
illnesses needed to be implemented. Approval was
granted to begin a Risk Management Injury Prevent
and Wellness Program.
The development began for the injury prevention component, entitled “Think
Safety” and the Wellness component, entitled
“Well for
Life”.
The Human Resources
Department launched the “Well For
Life” Wellness program on September 17,
2002, through the
“
Well for Life” Walk/Run Wellness Fair. The
health fair
included health screenings, a 3-mile walk/run, health
education
materials and discussions provided by health and
community
service organizations.
Over the past two years the a wide range of activities
and offerings have been added to extend injury
prevention and illness prevention
beyond efforts designed to only reduce Worker’s
Compensation
and health insurance premiums. The prevent disease,
or maintain
health. A key factor in the utility of the model
is the integration
and overlap of responsibilities for health promotion
by various
departments and individuals inside and outside
of the school district.
The five basic components of the program are..
:
Health Education
Physical Fitness and Nutrition Programs
Employee Health Services and Employee Benefits
Employee Assistance Programs
Risk Management/Injury Prevention for a safe and
