The Kansas City, Missouri School District's Adult Basic Education (ABE) program serves older youth and adults who need basic skills to get a job, enter a training program, or pass the GED examination. Each year, ABE enrolls more than 6,000 students in day and evening classes designed to teach basic academic skills and prepare for the workplace.
Literacy, life skills and technical education are fundamental to the program. Many ABE participants go on to advanced training or enter the workforce able to compete for better jobs. The annual graduation and awards ceremony typically recognizes about 150 evening high school and GED graduates, post-secondary education scholarship winners and outstanding performers.
Funded under the "Workforce Investment Act of 1998," ABE is administered by the Missouri State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Adult Education and Literacy program. ABE's expert faculty, staff and literacy volunteers have a reputation for dedication to quality instruction and helping program participants achieve their personal goals.
